I was looking at a report by UNICEF and the UN Migration Agency, International Organization for Migration. I was hoping to find something on orphans, but the 64 page document does not have the word mentioned. The title is Harrowing Journeys. The report basically describes the migration of people across the Mediterranean. The overwhelming majority are from Africa and Asia. About half are children and exploitation is high. The two biggest factors are labor and sexual.
What is surprising to me are the countries that take in the refugees. Turkey is number one with 2.9 million, followed by Pakistan (1.4M), Lebanon (1.0M), Iran (900K), and Uganda (900K). The top European country is Germany in 8th place at 700,000. As much as I track this issue in the news, I had no clue about the actual numbers at the destinations.
According to the report, the refugees are trying to get across the Mediterranean to Italy (34%), Germany (24%), France (10%) and other European countries. Italy is not on the list of over 200K refugees; France shows 300K. In the news, I read much about people passing through Greece, but Greece is not even mentioned. Most seem to want to get to Europe as the promised land, but the Europeans do not like. I can recall every German I chatted with last year was unhappy about the influx of refugees.
